SYNOPSIS
An Anthology of Healing and Humorous Prose and Poetry.
Third edition.  Edited by Dr Michael Midgley.  Published by Overton Studios Trust.

This anthology amuses and uplifts by turn.  It provides a bit of light-hearted relief from the daily suffering that chronic physical diseases may impose on those who have had the misfortune to contract any one of them.

Created especially for those who suffer from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Post Viral Syndrome or Fibromyalgia, by a physician and fellow sufferer.

But it can also be thoroughly enjoyed by their carers, relatives and friends and, indeed, by anyone in rude health as well.

THIS BOOK MAKES A GREAT BIRTHDAY, ANNIVERSARY OR CHRISTMAS PRESENT.

EXTRACTS FROM REVIEWS
This little volume, the latest offering from Overton Studios Trust, consists of a collection of writings assembled by Michael Midgley, a retired physician turned therapist and writer. Much of the content comes from his own pen, while some is from a variety of sources of both eastern and western origin: from the Bhaghavad Gita to William Blake; from Mother Teresa to Galileo; and from the sayings of Seng T’san (d. 606 C.E.) to Shakespeare.

While the bulk of the other sources could be said to provide the “sublime” element –- a quotation from The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is not untypical –- Midgley’s contributions are often intentionally ridiculous, as illustrated by his hilarious Informal Parody (of Lewis Carroll’s well-known nonsense poem, Jabberwocky), written when Midgley was an undergraduate at Manchester University.

Despite such humorous contributions, for this reader the main interest lies in Michael Midgley’s own reflections and narratives, many of which are of a rather more serious nature, often focusing on his success in meeting a 40-year challenge in the form of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). Woven among the classic quotations and light-hearted original compositions, are some essential clues to understanding how Dr. Midgley has been able to achieve a high degree (95% by his account) of self-healing. One suspects that the real purpose of this book may in fact be to entice people into sharing the change of thought system which, he claims, enabled him to achieve this success.

How else to explain the fact that among the diverse compositions and quotations that give the book its essential character, there are some unexpected bedfellows in the form of contributions of a personal and overtly spiritual nature? There are also some surprising theological ideas, focusing on such weighty matters as the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, the value of forgiveness and the nature of the afterlife. Perhaps the most striking idea in the book is the way the editor (and in this case the author) establishes a link between what he calls “a false message of the crucifixion” and “escape from everyday physical suffering”.

According to Dr. Midgley, this and similar ideas, and indeed, the self-healing he has achieved, are a direct result of his work over the years with the teachings of A Course in Miracles (1976), which one might think of as the ultimate self-help program . . . Regardless of the degree of acceptance of such ideas by his readers, . . . Dr. Midgley has put together a collection that will entertain, inspire and challenge.

The Reverend F. Hugh Magee BA.  Episcopal Diocese of Spokane, USA

Dr Midgley’s book combines wisdom, advice on self-help, inspiring texts and witty musings. Dr Midgley understands our frailty and gives us encouragement to deal with it by rising above it to a peaceful level of conscious awareness.

June Brown JP, BA.

This book is a mixture of humorous verses written by the author during his days as a medical student at Manchester University and some more thoughtful pieces reflecting on his growing conviction that managing ME and related conditions is as much about mindset as about medicine.

His thinking and his interpretation of some Christian teachings are some distance from those of mainstream Christianity . . . (but) . . . his telling of his own story in ‘A Holy Encounter’ I found more helpful and easier to relate to – allowing for the very personal experience that he interprets as meeting Jesus.

It is important to understand that the interpretation of Jesus’ miracles and his death and resurrection are very much those of the author but they should not be allowed to obscure the fundamental message that ME can be managed and ‘healing’ can take place and that in this each sufferer is his or her own consultant.
